Moxibustion or Moxa

Moxibustion or moxa is a therapy within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which consists in burning a warm moxa -a stick made from dried mugwort root, Artemesia argyi or A.vlugaris, or other herbs- very near the surface of the patient’s skin, usually around or above Acupuncture points.

By applying moxa the Chinese practitioner aims to invigorate the flow of Qi (human body’s vital energy), expelling cold and damp from inside the body, strengthen the blood, dispel certain pathogenic influences and maintain general health.

Moxibustion for back pain is a very popular therapy but this treatment can also be used for:

  •     Pain in general usually due to injury or arthritis. It is especially helpful when the pain reduces with the application of heat

  •     Digestive problems and irregular elimination process

  •     Gynecological and obstetrical conditions, including breech baby in late term pregnancy

  •     Protection against cold and flu strains

  •     Moxibustion for cancer (side effects)

The practitioner will often apply both acupuncture and moxibustion in the same session (when appropriate to the diagnosis and treatment strategy) since it is believed that the therapies increase each other's effectiveness when used together.
